RADICAL EXPRESSION: Left, Eve Ensler, the author of the Vagina Monologues and right, Minister Nsaba Buturo |
True to its nature, the government is dillydallying over this new weird play, The Vagina Monologues.
We had taken heart when it was reported that the play had been banned. But according to State Minister for Information James Nsaba Buturo’s statement as quoted in the media on Friday, the government is only “opposed” to the title, whatever that means.
Buturo, in his press address, was meandering without a definite stand on the play. So Buturo, are you for or against the play? There is nothing like opposing and condemning. Ban the play or promote it. Period. Otherwise, you may look compromised by some circles, just like the promoters you accuse of stooping too low to get dollars.
Remember President Yoweri Museveni’s stance on homosexuals. First it was “Arrest them”, then “They can do their thing but quietly.”
Religious leaders. where are you? And our ‘honourable’ MPs?
A few years ago a friend remarked that if the whites brought a culture of people marrying their mothers, all Ugandans would follow suit, simply to be seen to be ‘modern’.
By the way, you ‘modern parents’, how would you explain this new play to your curious five-year olds? And to a visiting mother from Bamugolodde? God save Uganda.
