Polygamy should not be demonised
It is appalling how the so-called moralists have demonised polygamy.
It is a kind of crusade that will not bear fruit in the context of natural law. What would be more justifiable; to have a string of divorces or one keeping an extra relationship sanctioned by the community (polygamy)?
Polygamy per se is not prohibited by any religious law. The Ten Commandments, don’t condemn it and nor did even Paul in his letters to the church at Corinth. The only issue we need to tackle here, and I concur with our Muslim brothers, is how to mainstream polygamy with HIV/AIDS and other factors that affect the socio-economics of the community and the country as a whole.
For instance, it was not proper for a poor and irresponsible individual in the community to marry an additional woman. There were well-laid down procedures of engaging in another relationship, which I am proud to say, the Sharia law defines explicitly.
It is from the above argument, that I think we need to leave such aspects of life to be managed by the community but not Parliament.
Europeans want to impose on us their lifestyle and in the process break down our social norms. If western values are so good, why is it that sub-Saharan Africa which is Christian and monogamous, has a higher HIV prevalence than northern Africa which is polygamous?
Polygamy was meant to curtail promiscuity and keep the men so busy that they do not join the sexual network.
In the western world, they have serialised divorces and remarrying. Is that not a form of polygamy?
