Science and innovation at the service of tourism in Cuba

This section attached to the Ministry of Tourism does not overlook research as part of the regional program for science, technology and innovation for the sustainable development of the sector.

In a province with a little more than 20 percent of the country’s beaches, as well as the owner of a great cultural wealth in the capital, whose historical center is a World Heritage Site, Cemtur is revitalizing its business strategy.

Specifically in an interview with Prensa Latina, its director, Gerson Herrera, spoke about the four projects, which aim to contribute to solving the sector’s problems or needs.

“One of them with Mipyme (a small and medium enterprise) is looking for various players in the economy, and it comes to implementing a computer program for information management,” he explained.

The coordinator of the regional program for the development of tourism in the region, confirmed that “it will be implemented in Cayo Cruz in pursuit of the same technological sovereignty.”

Cayo Cruz, one of the potential destinations for lovers of sunny and beach tourism, is precisely a leisure space that is growing, and where the Spanish Iberostar chain is growing.

“Covid-19 has affected us a lot, in addition to the competition in the region, not to mention that even with climate change, Europeans are traveling less to the Caribbean, so we seek to redirect our products for better exploitation.” announced.

In this order, the specialist referred to tourist centers such as Santa Lucia, also located in the north of the region.

“Environmental studies conducted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment allowed us to come to the conclusion that we have to further promote this destination as an opportunity for marine activities, with coral reefs and other features that attract tourism,” he said.

Herrera also described Camaguey as a destination with “a strong infrastructure in its tourist factory, complete and original, which we can always better promote through science.”

Recently, Camagüey University has taken off in the business world with Ucetic.SA, providing services from science and innovation, and Cemtur also included professionals in the search for the sustainable development of the country.
