Renewal of the EU strategy for the Great Lakes region: Council approves findings

Today the Council adopted conclusions outlining the EU’s long-term renewed cooperation in the Great Lakes region. The overall objective and priority of the European Union is Promoting peace, democracy and sustainable development in the Great Lakes region contributing to Transforming the main root causes of insecurity and instability into shared opportunities. To this end, the European Union offers to support the countries of the region in their efforts to pass:

• From tensions to confidence, security and stability
• From trade in natural resources to trade and sustainable development, f
• From competition to cooperation and integration.

EU cooperation will give priority to support commitment from countries safelyRespecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region and promoting an environmental environment Mutual trust and cooperation.

The strategy will A frame of reference for all EU policies and actions in the Great Lakes regionwith which to achieve greater coherence, consistency and continuity, with particular attention to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda, but also to cooperate with Other countries and organizations in the region, the United Nations and international partners.
