A team from the Elena Barraquer Foundation is planning to perform cataract surgery on thousands of blind people in Dakar (Senegal) within a week, with a journey beginning on January 8, led by Dr. Elena Barraquer and thirty other volunteers.

The flight is organized with the Servir le Sénégal Foundation and will have financial sponsorship from the Spanish multinational Mango, support from Iberia Airlines, which will transport the necessary medical supplies, and Oertli Instrumente Ag, which will provide doctors and other items.

The team, which will leave Barcelona for Dakar on January 8, consists of five surgeons, five instrumentalists, three anesthetists, four ophthalmologists and twelve field assistants for the surgeries that will be carried out. It will be held at the Dakar Military Hospital.

Two years ago, the Foundation sent two eye surgeons and a team of optometrists to Sierra Leone for a week to treat eye-related problems and diseases among the region’s residents.
