New Mexico- Authorities said a New Mexico State Police officer was killed and others wounded in Thursday’s shooting on Interstate 10 between Deming and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

And one of the suspects was killed, according to the state police in a statement, adding that “the scene is still active with limited information.” Police said the highway had been closed.

Authorities said they were investigating two shooting sites along the highway.

Amy Evans, a spokeswoman for the New Mexico Department of Transportation, said the officer was killed after the first shooting at Interstate 10 near Aquila, between Deming and Las Cruces.

From there, a car drove east down the highway and passed through Las Cruces, which is about 40 miles away, where another officer was injured near Messila Avenue, and taken to hospital.

Dan Trujillo, a spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department, said his agency was called in to help after the first shooting and he blocked motorway exits while officers pursued a white van.

The administration said that drivers should avoid that area and search for alternative routes until the investigation is completed, a process that could take hours.

Doña Ana County Police Office asked residents to avoid driving on Highway 10 near Interstate 25 and Motel Boulevard. He also reported that traffic lanes were closed in both directions and would remain as such for several hours.
