Putin offers Russian citizenship to all Ukrainians

Moscow. Russia announced on Monday that it is facilitating the acquisition of Russian citizenship for all Ukrainians, thus expanding the scope of The measure, which so far applies only to the Ukrainian territory occupied by its forces.

The “Citizens of Ukraine (…) have the right to apply for citizenship of the Russian Federation according to the simplified procedure”, Refers to a decree issued by President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

Thus, Putin extends to all Ukrainians the measure approved in May for residents of Zaporizhia and Kherson, which he has largely occupied since his February offensive.

The occupation authorities in these two regions had already announced their readiness for a referendum on annexation to Russia.

Residents of Luhansk and Donetsk are now eligible for Russian citizenship.

Russia is accused of distributing Russian passports in neighboring countries to demonstrate its influence.

Before Ukraine, it did the same in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, in Georgia, and in Transnistria in Moldova.

Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova are former Soviet republics with pro-Western ambitions.
