These Daniel Kaluuya Performances Need to Be Seen

Daniel Kaluuya reached the pinnacle of acting greatness earlier this year, when he won Best Supporting Actor at the 93^rd Academy Awards, for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah. The thirty-two-year-old was born in the city of London, England, but both of his parents are originally from Uganda. The actor and writer is deeply proud of his Ugandan roots, and first visited the country when he was seven. In fact, the now Hollywood royalty even shouted out the city of Kampala in his Oscar acceptance speech.

Get Out

Jordan Peele’s 2017 horror movie Get Out is a modern classic of the genre, and routinely now finds its way onto lists of the 100 best horror movies of all time. The film stars Kaluuya, in what is his first leading performance in Hollywood, and he absolutely knocks it out the park. He plays a character called Chris, who is invited to meet his white girlfriend Rose’s parents for the first time.

He’s hesitant to go, as he feels it will be incredibly awkward, though he goes through with it because of his love for Rose. Things do, indeed, start out awkwardly, but then as time goes on the situation becomes weirder and weirder, leading him to discover some truly terrible truths about Rose and her family.

Black Panther

No other Hollywood movie has showcased the power of Africa like 2018’s Black Panther. The movie was the 18^th instalment in the massively popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, and featured a magnificent array of actors who were of African origin. The late Chadwick Boseman played the titular role, who is a superhero from the fictional East-African country of Wakanda.

Kaluuya’s character is named W’Kabi, and is Black Panther’s best friend. Whilst the role didn’t take centre stage, it allowed Kaluuya to show his more subdued side, as the character was there to give sage advice to those around him. It was a popular role though, and we’re excited at seeing more of him in the upcoming Black Panther sequel that is due in late 2022.

One of the best scenes in the movie is the intense fight in a casino, that pits Black Panther and his entourage, against a group of villainous henchmen, led by the criminal Ulysses Klaue. Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah, in theatres an extraordinary movie, though if you didn’t manage to catch it when it came out this year, you should still make sure to watch it at home. Kaluuya won his Oscar for his scintillating performance as the Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton. It wasn’t the only award he won for the role though, as he also got rewarded with a BAFTA, a Critics’ Choice Award, and a Golden Globe.

Watching the movie, it’s easy to see why, as Kaluuya manages to bring a burning intensity to the role that will have you captivated. A scene where he delivers a powerful speech to a packed church is delivered with so much passion and reverence that the actor completely disappears into the role.
