When do the United States, Colombia and Mexico play in the World Classic?

It’s been six years of waiting, but the international World Baseball Classic is back. And it’s even bigger, increasing the number of teams from 16 to 20. The games have already started on the other side of the world, at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium in Taiwan and the Tokyo Dome in Japan. Chase Field in Phoenix and LoanDepot Park in Miami will see action this weekend.

The World Series Classic is a fun tournament where players from the major leagues mingle with some other strong international rivalries, such as the Korean and Japanese leagues, as well as being able to check out some minor league players and even unknown international players. Latin teams such as the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Puerto Rico are always attractive to many of their stars.

But in this article we will focus on Group C with Mexico, Canada, Colombia, the United States and Great Britain, which will play in Phoenix from March 11th. The top two in the group advance to the next round.

The United States team will defend its title six years after winning the title for the first time. Mike Trout, Tria Turner, Mookie Betts, Nolan Arenado and Adam Wainwright are part of the All-Star roster for Major League Baseball, which will play its first game of the contest on March 11 in Phoenix. The team will be led by Mark DeRosa, who has played 16 seasons in the major leagues.

Led by Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías, Mexico is one of the favorites to advance to the next round due to the players it has in the major leagues, such as José Urquidy (Astros) and Cuban-born Mexican Randy Arozarena (Tampa Bay). Benjamin Gil is the manager of the Mexico national team.

Canada is led by Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers first baseman who was born in Fountain Valley, California, to Canadian parents. He is one of three players on the team who were not born in Canada and the only one born in the United States. Other names MLB fans may recognize are Cal Quantrill and Tyler O’Neill, who represent the Guardians and Cardinals, respectively.

Colombia will be participating for the second time in the World Classic Championship. The coffee team couldn’t get past the first round in its debut in 2017, so it will be targeting the 2023 edition. It will be a tough job, but it will have outstanding players in the major leagues such as pitchers Nabil Kreismat (Padres) and Jose Quintana (Mets), outfielder Giovanni Orcilla (Angels) or outfielder Harold Ramirez (Tampa Bay). The Colombian team is led by Yulbert Cabrera.

The USA has the second-best odds of winning the 2023 World Classic, according to Caesars Sportsbook, behind only the Dominican Republic. The United States defeated Puerto Rico to win the tournament in 2017.
